Eyesight allows every human being to experience their world to their fullest—whether in attaining an education, competing in sports, or performing their daily activities. Humans receive most of their sensory input through their eyes, so one could consider it the most important of the senses to interact with the world. For kids, poor eyesight hurts their ability to learn at school, since they can’t read the board from their seats. As a result, their learning and future opportunities are limited. For adults and the elderly, impaired vision impacts their driving, job opportunities, and personal lives. We strive to change this.
Unfortunately, today, visual impairment has become a public health problem due to uncorrected refractive errors and the lack of accessibility of healthcare options in underserved/rural areas. As the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine puts it,
Importance of Eyesight
Vision can be a barrier to a child’s education and future. If someone can’t read long-distance objects (e.g. a teacher’s blackboard), it’s much more difficult for them to grasp the concepts being taught, which may cause them to lag behind. Education is key to future opportunities and successes in life.
Quality of life
Clear vision can lead to an improved quality of life in many areas, such as driving skills, athletic abilities, learning and comprehension, navigation, and more; the gift of vision improves each of our lives in every aspect.
Disparities in Eye Care
Figure 1: Breakdown of Visual Impairments
Almost 90% of visual impairments occur in households in underserved regions without adequate access to healthcare. This means that the majority of visual impairments in the world are left untreated.
Our visual acuity exam app and community outreach programs focus on helping these households the most. By targeting our services to the people most in need, we take a bold and unique approach to solving this problem.

Figure 2: Accessibility of Mobile Technology
Our app’s platform—iOS and Android mobile technology—is perfect for tackling this issue. In the last few years specifically, mobile technology has become accessible to third-world regions and rural areas, even where healthcare is sparse.
This widespread access to technology paves the path for software developers and innovators, like us, to help the people most in need. We are able to target a wider audience now than ever possible in the past.
